quelônios at Rio das Mortes

Over the last ten years, the Project Quelônios do Rio das Mortes has worked with local communities at the northeast region of Mato Grosso to protect Amazonian Tracajás and Turtles-two Brazilian species threatened with extinction.

The Project´s goal is to recognize, understand and value local biodiversity to promote the sustainable use of natural resources, the maintenance of ecosystem services and protection of habitat with great ecological importance.

The project is located at Rio das Mortes beach in the city of Novo Santo Antônio, Mato Grosso State in Brazil.

HOW IT WORKS

During the breeding period, quelônios (mother turtles) are monitored on the beaches during their egg laying and the nests are marked with support the from the city community.

After hatching, quelônios are collected and protected for a period of 30 days to ensure survival of its species.
